Disabilities among children aged less than or equal to 17 years - United States, 1991-1992

Article Abstract:

The Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) for 1991-1992 collected information about disabilities among children 17 years of age or younger. A total of 3.8 million children had a disability during this period. The disabling condition most often reported was learning disability (29.5%). Other disabilities were speech disorders (13.1%), mental retardation (6.8%), asthma (6.4%), and mental or emotional disorders (6.3%). The information will be useful in providing needed services and evaluating prevention programs.

Pervasive Developmental Disorders in Preschool Children

Article Abstract:

Many preschool children may have an undiagnosed developmental disorder. Of 15,500 preschool children who were screened, 97 were found to have autism or some other developmental disorder. About one-fourth of these children had some degree of mental retardation.

Pervasive Developmental Disorders in Young Children

Article Abstract:

Many preschool children may have an undiagnosed developmental disability such as autism or related disorders. Pediatricians should look for any delays in language acquisition or social problems and refer such children for further assessment.
