Discordant responses to potent antiretroviral treatment in previously naive HIV-1-infected adults initiating treatment in resource-constrained countries

Article Abstract:

The frequencies of and the risk factors for discordant responses at 6 months on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in previously treatment-naive HIV patients from resource-limited countries are assessed. The frequency of and risk factors for discordant responses are comparable with those of developed countries, but longer follow-up is required to assess the long-term impact of discordant responses on mortality in the resource-limited settings.

Predictors of virologic failure in HIV-1-infected patients starting highly active antiretroviral therapy in Porto Alegre, Brazil

Article Abstract:

Predictors of virologic response 6 months after initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy in a cohort of HIV-infected patients in Brazil are assessed. A significant improvement is found in virologic suppression over time, consistent with the introduction of nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and ritonavir-broosted regimens into clinical practice.

Comparison of clinical response to initial highly active antiretroviral therapy in the patients in clinical care in the United States and Brazil

Article Abstract:

The studies conducted to determine the differences in the clinical response to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) from HIV clinical practices in the United States and Brazil indicate that HAART could be similarly effective in treating HIV/AIDS in countries with different economies.
