Diversity in medicine

Article Abstract:

Medical schools should continue to recruit minority applicants. Affirmative action programs are under attack in several states, which could reduce the number of minority students who enroll in medical school. However, minorities make up an increasing proportion of the US population. A 1996 study found that black and Hispanic communities in California were likely to have a physician shortage. And the physicians who did practice in these communities were more likely to be black or Hispanic. Black physicians cared for more black patients and Medicaid patients than other physicians and Hispanic physicians cared for more Hispanic and uninsured patients than other physicians. Many people may be more comfortable with a physician from their own ethnic group. Forty percent of the minority students who graduated from medical school in 1993 said they wanted to practice in underserved communities, compared to 9% of other graduates.
