Do we really neeed OSHA?

Article Abstract:

A growing number of people are beginning to advocate the abolition of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). These critics charge that the OSHA's inspection and penalty approach is not the appropriate way to ensure workplace safety and that the agency should instead function as a consultant to employers. However, past experience has shown that gentle persuasion is all but useless when it comes to regulating industries. Inspections and penalties may be imperfect but they are the best option available for exercising the agency's powers and duties.

OSHA gets tough with new initiative: with limited resources, OSHA's best hope may be its new Cooperative Compliance Program

Article Abstract:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Cooperative Compliance Program (CCP) is a radical workplace safety compliance program that may just be the answer to OSHA' limited resources in workplace inspection. The program relies on the cooperation of firms in developing their own workplace safety programs. The advantage of the CCP over previous programs is that it supplies employers with incentives, such as free consultations services from OSHA in developing their safety program.

Clinton team faces tough OSHA challenges

Article Abstract:

The new administration of Bill Clinton is expected to have a tough time supporting the mandate of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of a lack of resources. The federal agency's area level officers are severely constrained in their enforcement activities due to limited time and resources. A program developed by the OSHA, the ROBO-COSHO, however, may offer some hope since it will help make OSHA compliance officers more efficient.
