Psychologists rap managed care, propose new plan

Article Abstract:

The American Psychological Assn (APA) is proposing 'Integrated Care,' an alternative to mental health managed care. The APA says that the cost of mental health services under managed care plans is prohibitive and that this cost could be reduced by allowing employers to work directly with psychologists, psychiatrists and insurance companies to establish group discount rates. An APA survey of 80 Fortune 500 companies revealed that most of them were unhappy with both the quality and the cost of managed care.

Doctors, experts debate how to be open about fees

Article Abstract:

Most physicians think information about fees should be made available to patients, but opinions are divided on whether to post a fee list. Consultants say a patient's primary concern is not with the fee amount, but with the value of services rendered. The Council on Medical Service has agreed to consider guidelines after Dr. Leonard Morse, president elect of the Massachusetts Medical Society, urged the AMA to approve posting of fees.
