Ethically justified guidelines for defining sexual boundaries between obstetrician-gynecologists and their patients

Article Abstract:

It seems that guidelines on sexual contact between obstetrician-gynecologists and their patients can be based solely on the overriding virtues of the profession. Current guidelines argue that obstetrician-gynecologists should refrain from sexual contact with their patients because patients may fear the doctor's authority and consent unwillingly or because the doctor should look out for the patient's best interests. However, patients can and do consent to sexual contact. The virtues of ethical discipline should guide doctors to refrain from sexual contact with their patients.
