Don't hamper foreign anti-smoking efforts

Article Abstract:

The US government has taken significant steps in the last 20 years to discourage smoking. However, the federal government has not taken the same kind of attitude in trying to dissuade foreign countries from using its tobacco products. Current legislation in Taiwan to discourage tobacco use by its citizens is being opposed by the U.S. Trade Representative's Office. The trade office claims it opposes the legislation due to its policy of non-discriminatory treatment for all American products abroad. This conflicts with the federal governments policy of reducing the use of tobacco in the US.

More steps in fight to cut short smoking

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court decision in Jun 1992 which left tobacco companies vulnerable to smokers' liability suits has given new hope to those fighting the war against smoking. Policy decisions made at the American Medical Assn's annual meeting have laid the groundwork for ongoing efforts in support of cigarette tax increases, anti-smoking legislation and restrictions on tobacco advertising. Individual physicians are encouraged to make their views known to their elected representatives.

Smoking wars invade restaurants

Article Abstract:

Maryland lawmakers and special interest groups were battling over exemptions to the state's ban on smoking in public buildings, which was scheduled to take effect Mar 27, 1995. It is likely that bars that have limited or no food service will be exempted. At least three positions had been put forward concerning smoking in restaurants. The only exemption bill that had been introduced would exempt restaurants that have liquor licenses.
