'Doom and gloom': economist predicts decade of hospital closings and MD income erosion

Article Abstract:

Paul Feldstein, medical economist, feels that the demand for health care services is on the decline. Mr. Feldstein predicts at least 1,000 hospitals will go out of business in the next decade and physicians will see further erosion of their income. The desire of government, labor, insurance carriers, and business to establish cost controls on health care services is the driving force behind this movement. Health maintenance organizations will probably benefit from this movement.
