Doppler ultrasonography in high-risk pregnancies: systemic review with meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

Doppler ultrasonography may be successfully used to reduce the chance of infant death by analyzing umbilical arteries. Researchers conducted a search of the medical literature to find 12 randomized controlled trials that studied the effectiveness of Doppler ultrasonography in high-risk pregnancies. Their results showed that when Doppler ultrasonography is used to assess umbilical arteries in high-risk pregnancies, the risk of infant death before or shortly after birth is reduced by 38%. The number of stillbirths and deaths of newborns dropped when doctors used the results of Doppler ultrasound analysis to inform their treatment decisions. Doppler ultrasonography may prove its usefulness in cases where the umbilical artery diastolic blood flow is absent.

Doppler velocimetry determined redistribution of fetal blood flow: correlation with growth restriction in diamniotic monochorionic and dizygotic twins

Article Abstract:

Blood flow redistribution appears to be more likely in diamniotic monochorionic twins who are small for gestational age. Researchers measured cerebral and umbilical blood flow in 33 pairs of diamniotic monochorionic twins and 50 pairs of diamniotic dichorionic twins. The former have a fused placenta with a thin dividing membrane and same-sex twins while the latter have separate placentas with a thick dividing membrane and different-sex twins. Blood flow redistribution, or 'brain-sparing', was much more likely in the low-birth-weight diamniotic monochorionic twins.

Clinical significance of early diastolic notch depth: uterine artery Doppler velocimetry in the third trimester

Article Abstract:

A diastolic notch of 0.70 or less may be a sign of problems during pregnancy. The diastolic notch is a characteristic pattern of blood flow in the uterine arteries. In a study of 198 pregnant women, 90% of those with a diastolic notch of 0.70 or less had an adverse perinatal outcome.
