Drugs for psychiatric disorders

Article Abstract:

Drugs which are marketed for use in treating psychiatric disorders are generally divided into categories defined by use. For example, drugs would be considered for relief of anxiety, such as the older benzodiazepines and the more recent Zoloft, Xanax, Paxil, etc. Antidepressants include tricyclics, SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and others. The drug of choice is often selected according to its side effects, such as lithium for bipolar disorder, and other drugs for psychoses, and for delirium and agitation. The goal is to achieve the best possible effect with minimal side effects, some of which may be devastating to the patient.
