Ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast

Article Abstract:

Studies suggest that localized removal of a type of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) followed by radiation appears to be preferable among the increasing numbers of patients with this condition. Researchers analyzed studies published since 1966 on the treatment, characteristics, incidence, and recurrence of DCIS. Significantly more patients have had recurring breast cancer after a lumpectomy alone compared with lumpectomy followed by radiation. Studies have not confirmed the benefits of full breast removal. Twice as many patients had DCIS in 1992 as expected from previous incidence studies.

Evaluation of the written information sent to women who are called back for further investigation of breast screening in the UK

Article Abstract:

It is vital that women who are recalled for further investigation of possible abnormalities in the UK's NHS Breast Screening Programme are handled extremely sensitively. In this respect, the initial recall letter is extremely important. Research indicates that providing information can play a key role in reducing worry and improving satisfaction. It is vital to word this letter very carefully, emphasising that the majority of women who are recalled are found not to have breast cancer.
