Dying of embarrassment

Article Abstract:

Men have little awareness of prostate cancer, and the Better Prostate Health campaign has been recently launched to inform the public. Around 8,000 men in England and Wales die from prostate cancer annually. Prostate cancer is discovered in autopsies of 90% of 80-year-olds and 30% of 50-year-olds, according to Mark Speakman, consultant urologist. Patients should seek medical advice if they find passing water difficult. General practitioners (GPs) should undertake digital rectal examinations in men who are at risk of prostate cancer, according to Dr Hilary Jones, TV doctor and GP.

Mental health and older people

Nursing of mentally ill elderly people is a good career choice, with nurses now able to help such clients much more than previously believed. Therapeutic nursing intervention is becoming increasingly commonplace in the nursing of the mentally ill, such as sensory stimulation and dementia care mapping. A great deal of skill is required to nurse elderly confused people and the involvement of qualifed mental health nurses is vital. There is currently a shortage of such staff. Career opportunities are discussed.

The threat of student loans

Article Abstract:

The gradual erosion of the student loans system in the U.K. is having a serious affect on student nurses, even though some may be on bursaries. There is increasing acceptance that free education is coming to an end and that a pay-back loan system is a fair alternative, but such a system could have an impact on the range of people wanting to enter the nursing profession. Some say that nursing students are a special case and all ought to receive bursaries.
