Earth day plus 20, and counting

Article Abstract:

With the help of Gaylord Nelson, a former US senator, the first 'Earth Day' was held in the spring of 1970. The purpose of Earth Day was to demonstrate to Congress and to the public that an environmental movement existed. Over the last 20 years, environmental concerns have become a growing part of most all political campaigns, and have changed our habits of travel, play, work, diet, dress, and architecture. Our perception of nature has also changed dramatically, from a feeling that nature is indestructible, overbearing, and dominant to a feeling that nature is fragile and must be treated with caution. This relatively new perception of nature as being defenseless and in need of protection has generally become accepted as truth. During the Nixon administration several different acts and laws concerning the environment were passed. These include the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. It is estimated that private and public agencies spend 100 billion dollars a year on pollution control. Over the last several years, the increased awareness of the need to develop new methods of pollution and waste control has resulted in an increased employment of biologists, ecologists, and atmospheric scientists. Although attempts are being made to reduce pollution and waste, the population is still growing at a rapid rate, more products are being consumed, and more cars are being driven. On the positive side, eight national parks have been established and protected areas of wilderness have been expanded by 80 million acres since 1970. Solutions to many environmental problems will involve rethinking the way we live and making the necessary changes. However, people have to want to make the changes themselves in order for it to work.
