Easier payments for student services; HCFA spells out new conditions

Article Abstract:

Patient services performed by medical students beginning Jul 1, 1996, may be billed to Medicare if a teaching physician or resident is present, according to rule clarifications by the Health Care Financing Administration. The agency seeks to curb opportunities for overbilling and fraud. Physicians continue to seek further clarification of such issues as whether doctors must repeat examinations by students, and differences between ambulatory and hospital treatments.

Study suggests lower global payments

Article Abstract:

Medicare payments for physician's postoperative visits have fallen 6.7% and could be further reduced, according to a report from RAND Corp, a California research institute. Length of patients' hospital stays dropped 10% between 1984 and 1986, but physicians substituted outpatient care. The study analyzed surgeon's global fees to determine what proportion may result from duplicative care.

Study finds geographic variations in end-of-life care

Article Abstract:

The 1998 Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care shows there are major differences in physician supply, number of hospital beds and number of medical specialists in different parts of the US. These differences have an effect on how much Medicare is spent on various procedures. The amount and type of care that a Medicare patient receives depends upon where they live.
