Easing the symptoms

Article Abstract:

The care of an elderly woman with a stage three fungating carcinoma of the breast is described. On her admission to hospital it was explained that wound healing was not feasible, although some symptoms, such as odour , bleeding, and discharge could be alleviated. The patient was discharged from hospital after 10 days, but was readmitted 10 months later with persistent pain which was worse at dressing changes. The main focus of care was to treat the patient's symptoms and give support to her and her family.

If you go down to A&E today: teddy bear clinics at a hospital in Wales are helping to prepare pre-school children for the experience of attending hospital in an emergency

Article Abstract:

The Teddy Bear Clinics run at Brecon War Memorial Hospital in Wales are designed to prepare pre-school children for a possible emergency admission to hospital. The children are put at ease by taking their teddies for treatment and being shown the most common equipment.

Has the RCN outlived its usefulness?

Article Abstract:

Mixed views are being expressed among nurses in the UK about the effectiveness of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). Some feel that it continues to reflect the needs of its members, while others feel that it is hampering the transition towards modern nursing.
