Effect of Title X 'gag rule' unchanged, doctors say

Article Abstract:

A House subcommittee investigating the new guidelines for federally funded family planning clinics listened to statements from officials of the AMA, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and others. All except William R. Archer, III, of the Public Health Service, expressed the opinion that the language of Title X prohibits physicians from recommending abortion. Raymond Scalettar, an AMA trustee, requested that the regulations be changed, since they also limit nurses' rights to communicate with patients.

Both sides claim victory in Supreme Court ruling on tobacco lawsuits

Article Abstract:

The conclusion of the Supreme Court case Cipollone v Liggett Group Inc left both sides claiming victory. The Supreme Court ruled that the tobacco industry may be held liable for smoking-related lawsuits, especially if fraud or misrepresentation of the harmful effects of smoking can be proven. However, the tobacco industry believes the ruling will make it tougher for plaintiffs to win lawsuits.
