Effect of combination therapy with lipid-reducing drugs in patients with coronary heart disease and "normal" cholesterol levels: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Article Abstract:

Combination therapy appears to reduce blood lipid levels in patients with heart disease and normal cholesterol levels. A group of 91 patients of average age 60 received a predetermined sequence of medications in an attempt to reduce blood lipid levels. Pravastatin alone reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels by 32% and triglycerides by 15%. Adding nicotinic acid, depending on dosage, further reduced LDL cholesterol by 11%-14% and triglycerides by 10%-13%. Gastrointestinal symptoms were common. Four patients discontinued therapy for nausea or rashes, and one diabetic patient stopped because of high blood sugar levels.

Coronary angioplasty and CABG equally reduce cardiac risk in subsequent noncardiac surgery

Article Abstract:

The effect of CABG to percutaneous coronary angioplasty in patients is compared with multivessel disease that was randomly assigned to different strategies and underwent noncardiac surgery. The successful coronary revascularization along with angioplasty, which resulted in low event rates of postoperative myocardial infarction after subsequent noncardiac surgery for four years approximately, is demonstrated.
