Effect of increased fruit and vegetable intake on the susceptibility of lipoprotein to oxidation in smokers

Article Abstract:

Increasing dietary intake of fruit and vegetables could play a role in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis in both smokers and non-smokers. This is because carotenoid rich food has an inhibitory effect on the susceptibility of lipoprotein (LDL) to oxidation. Consuming carotenoids from natural sources, rather than in manufactured form, avoids an excessive rise in plasma carotenoids, which could have harmful effects. Carotenoids other than beta-carotene may also provide protection against oxidative diseases.

A preliminary open label dose comparison using an antioxidant regimen to determine the effect of viral load and oxidative stress in men with HIV/AIDS

Article Abstract:

Research describing the effects of antioxidant supplements on the viral load of HIV positive men is presented. Experiments involving forty eight men concluded that, although antioxidant supplements increase enzymatic defenses, they do not significantly the viral load.
