Effect of insulin therapy on body fat distribution in NIDDM patients with secondary sulfonylurea failure: a preliminary report

Article Abstract:

The effect of insulin therapy on body weight and distribution in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) was investigated. Five NIDDM patients with secondary sulfonylurea failure participated in the study. Results showed that insulin treatment caused an increase in body weight among NIDDM patients. However, visceral fat did not increase even as the visceral to subcutaneous fat ratio decreased considerably. These observations indicate that insulin therapy does not enhance the atherogenic process in NIDDM patients.

Relation of lifestyle factors to metacarpal bone mineral density was different depending on menstrual condition and years since menopause in Japanese women

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates whether metacarpal bone mineral density (BMD) differs depending on menstrual conditions and the number of post-menopausal years in Japanese women. The study of 750 volunteers aged between 40 and 69, shows that the relationship between BMD and lifestyle differs with life-stages. It is suggested that lifestyle modifications designed to prevent osteoporosis should be performed, taking into account life-stages and previous lifestyles.
