Effect of intensive therapy on residual beta-cell function in patients with type 1 diabetes in The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial: a randomized, controlled trial

Article Abstract:

Intensive insulin treatment appears to maintain pancreatic beta cell function in patients with type 1, or juvenile onset, diabetes. Beta cells are the cells that produce insulin. Researchers randomly assigned 855 patients with type 1 diabetes to receive intensive treatment with three or more insulin injections per day or conventional treatment with one or two injections per day. Those who received intensive treatment were more likely to have preserved pancreatic function. They were also more likely to control their blood sugar levels and had fewer episodes of hypoglycemia.

An Inherited Disorder of Lymphocyte Apoptosis: The Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome

Article Abstract:

Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is a genetic disorder in which the normal cycle of lymphocyte clearance is impaired, leading to an accumulation of white blood cells that attack normal tissues. Patients can develop an enlarged spleen, anemia to due blood cell destruction, low platelet count, and a low level of blood neutrophils. Patients with ALPS may be at increased risk for lymphoma.

Complications of diabetes and deafness inherited through the patient's mother

Article Abstract:

Young people who develop diabetes, deafness, and an eye condition called macular pattern dystrophy probably have maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD). This rare type of diabetes is caused by a genetic defect in energy production.
