Effect of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance on the efficacy of intermittent preventive therapy for malaria control during pregnancy: A systematic review

Article Abstract:

The effect of increasing resistance to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine on the efficacy of intermittent preventive therapy (IPT) during pregnancy in Africa is examined. The results have shown that in areas where1 to 4 treatments with sulfadoxine-pyrimethanime fail in children by day 14, the 2-dose IPT with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine regimen has provided substantial benefit to HIV-negative semi-immune pregnant women.

New drug formulations offer hope for easing global burden of malaria

Article Abstract:

A new formulation of antimalarial drug that combines artesunate and amodiaquine reduces the daily number of pills taken from 8 pills to only 2 pills. Combination regimens with fewer pills can decrease the cost of treatment, improve adherence and help in preventing the development of drug resistance.
