Effect of the interval between pregnancies on perinatal outcomes

Article Abstract:

Eighteen to 23 months appears to be the optimal intervention between pregnancies in order to avoid problems such as premature birth and fetal growth retardation. Researchers compared birth outcomes in 173,205 infants born in Utah between 1989 and 1996. Infants who were conceived 18 to 23 months after a previous birth were least likely to have low birth weight, be premature or be small for gestational age. Infants conceived less than 6 months or more than 10 years after a previous birth had higher risks for these conditions.

Pregnancy outcomes in women with inflammatory bowel disease - a population-based cohort study

Article Abstract:

Women with inflammatory bowel disease appear to be at increased risk of having birth complications. Birth profiles were evaluated among 239,773 single births, including 756 whose mothers had inflammatory bowel disease. Mothers with inflammatory bowel disease were twice as likely to deliver a low birth weight infant, 80% more likely to deliver prematurely, and 51% more likely to have a cesarean section than women without this disorder. Affected women were also 40% more likely to deliver an infant small for its birth age.

Effect of the interval between pregnancies on perinatal outcomes among white and black women

Article Abstract:

Women can reduce their risk of having a low-birth-weight, premature, or growth-restricted baby if they wait at least one year after a previous pregnancy to have another baby. However, the risk increases again if a woman waits 10 years or longer to have another baby.
