Effectiveness of highly active antiretroviral therapy in reducing heterosexual transmission of HIV

Article Abstract:

HIV prevalence was compared among those who were recruited during the years before the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and those included during the period when HAART was being used. An important decrease in HIV transmission was observed in a thoroughly studied group of steady heterosexual couples, after the introduction of HAART, irrespective of any changes in other factors that affect transmission.
