Effects of tissue plasminogen activator for acute ischemic stroke at one year

Article Abstract:

Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) appears to provide long-term benefits for stroke patients who receive it. rt-PA breaks up blood clots, which cause a stroke when they travel to the brain and block the supply of blood. Researchers followed 624 stroke patients for up to one year after they received rt-PA or a placebo within three hours of their stroke. Even after one year, those treated with rt-PA were 30% more likely to have minimal or no disability compared to those who received a placebo, or inactive substance.

Treatment of acute ischemic stroke

Article Abstract:

Drugs that break up blood clots may be very effective in stroke patients, especially if given within three hours of the stroke. However, doctors must only use this treatment on patients whose stroke is caused by a blood clot rather than a hemorrhage. Anticoagulants such as aspirin can also reduce the risk of a second stroke in patients whose stroke is caused by a blood clot.

Lack of clinical significance of early ischemic changes on computed tomography in acute stroke. (Original Contribution)

Article Abstract:

Doctors should not withhold treatment with t-PA from stroke patients just because the patient has early ischemic changes in the brain as seen on a CT scan. Early ischemic changes means the stroke is still in progress, but a study of 616 stroke patients showed those with early ischemic changes can still benefit from t-PA treatment.
