Electronic fetal monitoring

Article Abstract:

In light of conflicting research results it appears advisable that the decision to use electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) during labor should be made on an individual basis. EFM devices monitor fetal heart tones and theoretically, fetal distress. One study showed EFM use to be associated with a 60% decrease in infant death due to low oxygen supply. Another study has shown that seizure prevention is the only valid use for EFM. No cost benefit analysis for EFM has been performed to date.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a technologic assessment

Article Abstract:

Technology assessment teams are an important monitor of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, especially since this is the most popular form of gallbladder removal surgery. Over half a million Americans have gallbladder surgery each year, most of them with endoscopy, yet many unanswered questions exist with this procedure. Issues of surgeon credentials, alternative treatments, cost effectiveness and outcomes analyses can be addressed by technology assessment teams.

Support surfaces: therapeutic and performance insights

Article Abstract:

Mattresses designed specially for use in hospitals are parts of integrated bed systems which can be differently configured depending on patient needs. These support systems are designed to be placed over a standard mattress and are no more than 3 inches thick. Mattress cells can be filled with air, water, gel or foam, depending on the desired ability to oppose gravity. Misuse of these systems could contribute to patient mortality.
