Emerging cytopathic and antigenic simian immunodeficiency virus variants influence AIDS progression

Article Abstract:

Emerging cytopathic and antigenic simian immunodeficiency virus variants have been found to influence AIDS progression. Macaques were infected with cloned simian immunodeficiency viruses representing prototype variants from early-, intermediate- and late-stage infection having biological characteristics typical of viruses found at similar stages of HIV infection in humans.

HIV swiftly guts the immune system

Article Abstract:

A research on AIDS confirmed that the gut and other mucosal tissues is the major site of HIV infection and CD4+T cell loss rather than the blood. It is found that simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) rapidly and selectively infects and destroys memory CD4+T cells with in days of infection.
