Empirical Evidence of Design-Related Bias in Studies of Diagnostic Tests

Article Abstract:

Studies of diagnostic tests may overestimate the accuracy of the test if they are not properly designed. Researchers rated the quality of 184 studies that evaluated 218 diagnostic tests. Several qualities of the studies resulted in an overestimation of the accuracy of the test. They included evaluating the test in a diseased population versus a control group, using different reference tests, and other methodological problems.

Detection of Peripheral Arterial Disease in Primary Care

Article Abstract:

All elderly patients with risk factors for atherosclerosis should have their ankle-brachial index measured using Doppler ultrasound. This is the most accurate test for diagnosing peripheral arterial disease. Patients who test positive could be given treatments to prevent the development of heart disease.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography for the Evaluation of Lower Extremity Arterial Disease: A Meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is very useful for diagnosing arterial disease in the legs, according to researchers who reviewed 34 studies covering 1,090 patients. MRA is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging method, and three-dimensional gadolinium-enhanced MRA is better than two-dimensional MRA.
