Energy balance in lactating undernourished Indian women
Article Abstract:
The concept of adaptive mechanisms during lactation for conservation of energy led to the study of balance between energy intake and expenditure in lactating low-income Indian women. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) and milk ingested by infants were measured every month. Results showed that women with higher body weight lost more weight and that estimated mean energy intake was higher than energy expenditure. The energy cost of lactation is 549 kilocalories which falls within the Recommended Dietary Allowance and indicates a balance of energy intake and expenditure in these Indian women.

Lactation performance of rural Mesoamerindians
Article Abstract:
The maternal factors that potentially limit lactation and infant growth were studied among Mesoamerindian women in rural, underprivileged areas living on maize-predominant diets. Human milk production, milk composition, and maternal dietary intake, body weight, skinfold thicknesses and body composition were measured four to six months postpartum. Lactating quality and quantity was found to be a function of anthropometric and body composition measurements and not of the pregnant womens' current diet.

A new zinc product for the reduction of water in physiological fluids to hydrogen gas for 2H/1H isotope ratio measurements
Article Abstract:
A new zinc reagent was developed at Biogeochemical Laboratory at Indiana University that can convert physiological fluids to gas for assay of 2H/1H ratio measurements. Studies have shown that its accuracy and precision is comparable to AnalaR zinc shot, the production of which has been discontinued by the British Drug House. The 2H/1H ratios of physiological fluids can be measured with an accuracy of -1.0 plus or minus 2.9% and a precision of 1.6%
