Effective diminution of aminotic prostaglandin production by selective inhibitors of cyclooxygenase type 2

Article Abstract:

COX-2 inhibitors may be able to prevent premature labor. These drugs are best known for treating arthritis, but were also found to prevent the increase in prostaglandin levels in uterine tissues from pregnant women in labor.

Enhancement of amniotic cyclooxygenase type 2 activity in women with preterm delivery associated with twins or polyhydramnios

Article Abstract:

Cyclooxygenase-2 levels are increased in the uterus during pregnancy conditions that stretch the uterine wall, regardless of whether an infection is present. Cyclooxygenase-2 produces prostaglandins, which in turn can cause the uterus to contract. This can trigger premature labor during twin pregnancy or if to much amniotic fluid is produced.

Lipopolysaccharide enhances the transcription of prostaglandin H synthase-2 gene in primary human trophoblasts

Article Abstract:

Lipopolysaccharide, found in bacterial cell walls, increases prostaglandin H synthase-2 activity in embryonic cells, and may play a role in fetal death. In examining the possible effects of bacterial infection on fetal survival, researchers genetically altered trophoblastic cells to increase prostaglandin H synthase activity. Lipopolysaccharide increased the activity of genes encoding for prostaglandin production, and caused prostaglandin E2 production to increase 250%. Prostaglandins are associated with inflammation, which may compromise placental and fetal blood supply.
