Environmental chemical exposures and risk of herpes zoster

Article Abstract:

The relationship between hazardous waste sites and infectious diseases such as herpes zoster is examined, focusing on a population living near the Aberdeen pesticides dump site in Aberdeen, North Carolina. Topics include the disease rate among older and younger residents and the effect of environmental chemicals on immune suppression.

Exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and levels of thyroid hormones in children

Article Abstract:

The relationship of child blood levels of polycholorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead, cadmium, and mercury to thyroid hormones is studied, focusing on the implications of children's exposure toxic wastes. Results indicate PCBs and cadmium have an adverse affect on thyroid hormone levels and, thus, on childhood growth and development.

Calculating the interindividual geometric standard deviation for use in the integrated exposure uptake biokinetic model for lead in children

Article Abstract:

The ability to calculate interindividual geometric standard deviations (GSD) will assist in quantifying blood lead concentration in children. Data from specific Superfund sites combined with data from GSD models can allow researchers to find site-specific risks related to environmental lead exposure.
