Epidemiology of peripheral joint osteoarthritis

Article Abstract:

Much remains to be learned about osteoarthritis. Researchers still need to correlate the relationships among anatomical changes, symptoms, and joint function. Problems remain with techniques of making X-ray measurements of joints, with determining normal variation according to sex and age, and with determining the threshold at which measurements should be considered abnormal. Joints must also be considered separately because disease progress and symptoms vary. More information is needed on the inheritable predisposition to develop osteoarthritis. Finally, while much is known about osteoarthritic risk factors, much less is known about the how and why of these factors.

Radiographic assessment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis in the community: definitions and normal joint space

Article Abstract:

The presence of osteophytes on an X-ray of the knee appear to be the best predictor of knee pain in people with osteoarthritis. Osteophytes are excessive outgrowths of bone. Researchers asked two different doctors to examine the knee X-rays of 452 people. The presence of osteophytes was closely associated with knee pain. Conversely, loss of space inside the knee joint was not associated with knee pain.
