Estimates of the proportion of chemicals that were carcinogenic or anticarcinogenic in bioassays conducted by the National Toxicology Program

Article Abstract:

Estimates of the fraction of chemicals that are carcinogenic or anticarcinogenic have been made in rodent bioassays conducted as part of the National Toxicology Program (NTP). Global patterns of p-values from statistical tests applied to individual experiments were used. Most chemicals will, at high enough doses, cause some kind of perturbation in tumor rates. As much evidence for anticarcinogenesis as for carcinogenesis was seen in the study and perhaps there was more. Estimates were that 85% of the chemicals were carcinogenic or anticarcinogenic at some site in some sex-species group.
