Estimating prognosis for nursing home residents with advanced dementia

Article Abstract:

The factors associated with 6-month mortality in newly admitted nursing home residents with advanced dementia are identified and a practical risk score to predict 6-month mortality in this population is created. Results found a risk score based on 12 variables from the Minimum Data Set (MDS) estimates 6-month mortality for nursing home residents with advanced dementia with greater accuracy than existing prognostic guidelines.

Family perspectives on end-of-life care at the last place of care

Article Abstract:

Many people who die in a hospital or nursing home do not receive adequate pain treatment, emotional support, respect, and communication from doctors and other health care personnel. This was the conclusion of a survey of the family members of 1,578 patients who had died. Sixty-seven percent died in an institution. Patients who receive home hospice services are most likely to treated well.

Clinical and organizational factors associated with feeding tube use among nursing home residents with advanced cognitive impairment

Article Abstract:

About one-third of all nursing home residents with dementia in the US have a feeding tube, according to a survey of 186,835 nursing home residents. Factors associated with feeding tube placement include the age, sex, race, and functional status of the resident and the location, size, staff, case mix, demographics and fiscal characteristics of the nursing home.
