Evaluating syringe drivers

Article Abstract:

Nurses from 26 hospitals and 36 community nurses responded to a survey on the use of syringe drivers to administer pain relief drugs to terminal cancer patients. The main difficulty found in community use was inflammation at the injection point, whilst in hospitals it was inadvertent disconnection. The main benefit of the use of syringe drivers in both situations was the pain relief they offer. They also reduced nausea, made patients more comfortable and meant fewer injections. In the community, the use of the drivers freed patients from the need to be hospitalised and was considered cost-effective.
