Evidence-based practice: a mixture of motives?

Article Abstract:

Research and development (R&D) is taking on increasing importance within the UK National Health Service. Nurses wishing to take their part in this movement are striving to overcome barriers to nursing research, including the profession's lack of research experience and the low perception of the profession when it competes for research funds. Nurses should also be aware of the range of political agendas in the R&D environment. These include a keenness to reduce costs and to curb the spending power of doctors, as well as the more openly expressed desire to improve the quality of health care.
