Existence of iodine deficiency in Hong Kong - a coastal city in southern China

Article Abstract:

There is evidence for iodine deficiency in the coastal urban city of Hong Kong, known to be a non-goitrous area and therefore believed to have a low prevalence of iodine- deficiency diseases. Insufficient urine iodine concentration is observed in 51.7% of adults, 55.3% of elderly, and 45.3% of children. Salt and drinking water have low iodine content. There is a low consumption rate for seafood, such as seawater fish and seaweed, which are rich in iodine content. The prevailing level of severity of iodine deficiency may be detrimental to individuals under stress.

Eating patterns in functional dyspepsia: a case control study

Article Abstract:

The eating patterns and food choice of patients with functional dyspepsia are similar to those of age and sex matched non-dyspeptics. The food consumption over a seven-day period, as determined by the number of breakfasts, light and main meals, and snacks, was not significantly different for the two groups. Minor differences in preference for food types or timing of food intake among the patients may be reflective of differences in employment status rather than an attempt to relieve disease symptoms.

The deficiency in dietary iodine may also cause hypotyroidism and cretinism, neurological dysfunction and mentalretardation. The condition is of global proportion and affects over 200 millionpeople. Iodine prophylaxis has been instituted in many countries as a means of prevention.
