Expanding statin use to help more at-risk patients is causing financial heartburn

Article Abstract:

Studies have shown that many people with risk factors for heart disease may benefit from taking a group of cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins regardless of their cholesterol level. About 25 million people worldwide now take statins, but the World Health Organization estimates 200 million may benefit from these drugs. Unfortunately, statins are expensive and many countries with national health insurance cannot afford to offer them to so many people.
