Identifying widely covered drugs and drug coverage variation among Medicare Part D formularies

Article Abstract:

The Medicare Website is used for examining whether Medicare Part D formularies in California and Hawaii have at least 1 drug within each 8 treatment class for hypertension, hyperlipidemia and depression that can be identified for clinicians as widely covered by the vast majority of Part D plans. The results have shown that formularies varied substantially, but many treatment classes have at least 1 drug that is widely covered by nearly all Part D plans.

Impact of an annual dollar limit or "cap" on prescription drug benefits for Medicare patients

Article Abstract:

Many elderly people with chronic diseases will exceed their annual drug benefit and have to pay the entire cost of their medications, according to a study of 438,802 elderly people participating in a large Medicare + Choice plan. These plans have limits of $750 to $2,000 per year. Twenty-two percent of patients exceeded the limit in a $750 plan, 14% exceeded the limit in a $1,000 plan, and 4% exceeded the limit in a $2,000 plan.
