Article Abstract:

Philip Barker and Kevin Gournay are professors of psychiatric nursing, and they met 20 years ago at a behavioural psychotherapy conference. Philip Barker feels Kevin Gournay is a caring and compassionate person who believes that quantitative research based on randomised-controlled trials is the best way to establish a powerful knowledge base. Much of Barker's research is now qualitative, after he lost faith in randomised-controlled trials. Kevin Gournay believes that the differences between himself and Philip Barker, as far as clinical practice is concerned, are smaller than people realize, and that Barker's commitment to his ideas and the people he works with is completely dedicated.
