Factors Associated With Hepatitis B Vaccination Among Men Having Sexual Relations With Men in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Article Abstract:

Gay men in Canada are unlikely to be vaccinated against hepatitis B virus, although they may be at increased risk for the infection. Researchers surveyed and tested 653 men who have sex with men, and found that only 28% were fully vaccinated. Forty-six percent of participants had had one or more of the three-dose vaccine series. Unvaccinated men were more likely to use injectable illicit drugs, have had 20 or more sexual partners, or to see a physician who was unaware of their sexual orientation. Incompletely vaccinated men were more likely to have paid for sex, had unprotected anal intercourse, and to have never had a sexually transmitted disease.

Forgetting as a Cause of Incomplete Reporting of Sexual and Drug Injection Partners

Article Abstract:

Failure to remember all recent sexual or drug injection partners by people at high risk for HIV infection may significantly compromise contact notification and disease prevention efforts. Researchers interviewed 156 people twice over three months. As many as 72% of contacts were forgotten. Repeated prompting by the interviewers produced the recall of only 10% of partners. Repeated interviewing with frequent prompting may most effectively improve the recall of partners who may be at risk of disease transmission.
