Factors affecting mammographic visualization of the breast after augmentation mammaplasty

Article Abstract:

The degree of contracture and placement of breast implants can have a significant effect on the amount of breast tissue that can be visualized during mammography. Sixty-eight women undergoing augmentation mammaplasty had mammograms before the procedure and approximately one year later. Most of the women had both compression and displacement mammography. After mammaplasty, the amount of breast tissue that could be visualized was reduced by one-fourth to one-third. The size of the breast or the size of the implant had no relationship to the reduction in visualization, but the degree of contracture was associated with a reduction in visualization. The area visualized was reduced 50% in women with severe contracture. Implants that were placed under the pectoral muscles allowed more of the breast to be visualized. The use of displacement mammography did not significantly increase the area of breast that could be visualized.
