Federal funding and supportive policies for research

Article Abstract:

The impact of current political and economic realities on the U.S. investment and supportive policies for research is discussed. The fiscal, social and political realities in federal funding of research and the critical decisions faced by the U.S. on a confluence of critical issues relative to the research enterprise are highlighted.

Responses of medical schools to institutional conflicts of interest

Article Abstract:

The state of institutional conflicts of interest policies and practices in medical schools in the U.S. using as a standard the recommendations issued by two national higher education and research organizations is assessed. Results recommend the need for continuing attention by the academic medical community.

Fostering innovation and discovery in biomedical research

Article Abstract:

The changes that have occurred in biomedical research funding and priorities in the past 25 years are described. The current trends should be reversed and allow beginning principal investigators and postdoctoral fellows to carry out innovative, high-risk/high-reward research.
