Feds closely scrutinizing recruitment incentives

Article Abstract:

The IRS and Department of Health and Human Services are beginning to monitor physician recruitment practices more closely. They will be paying careful attention to arrangements that violate Social Security Act anti-fraud and anti-abuse provisions. Questionable practices include: low rates for office facilities, income guarantees, financial assistance for home purchases and arrangements whereby hospitals purchase practices from physicians and then allow the latter to operate these practices.

Survey shows doctors forsaking independence for salaries

Article Abstract:

More physicians are being offered salaries in 1996 than ever before. From 1995 to 1996, 63% of physicians were offered salaries as compensation, as compared to 44% from 1994 to 1995. The increase of salaries is due to such factors as government recruiting regulations, health care integration and a new acceptance of salaries, especially among young physicians who are eager to pay back their medical school debts.

Hospitalists join ranks of specialists most in demand today

Article Abstract:

Physicians should consider becoming hospitalists, or those physicians that prefer to work in hospitals. Hospitalists are in high demand during 1998. However, physicians should be aware that there is a different focus in this situation, where they are rewarded for letting patients go home sooner rather than a focus on quality care. But, physicians are also rewarded by having set hours and a predictable schedule.
