Fetal radius length: A critical evaluation of race as a factor in gestational age assessment

Article Abstract:

Fetal age can be determined by ultrasound, the use of high frequency sound waves to visualize internal structures. The length of the radius bone of the arm is easily measured and is considered an adequate indicator of fetal age. This measurement was calculated for 290 white and 63 black women between 13-43 weeks of pregnancy, to determine if differences at various stages of growth existed. The results indicate a 10-day difference of fetal age assessment by the third trimester. The incorporation of racial factors was significant enough to be used in ascertaining fetal age using fetal bone lengths.

The role of ultrasonography in the detection and management of adnexal masses during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Ovarian cysts found on routine ultrasound scans during pregnancy that are smaller than one inch are probably not dangerous. In a study of 7,996 pregnant women who had an ultrasound scan during their second or third trimester, 328 (4%) had an ovarian cyst. Eighty-two percent of the cysts were about one inch or smaller and many eventually disappeared without treatment. At the very least, an extensive work-up and possible treatment can wait until the woman gives birth.

The amniotic fluid index in normal twin pregnancies

Article Abstract:

It is possible to measure the amniotic fluid index of each amniotic sac in twin pregnancies. The amniotic fluid index measures the amount of amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac. In a study of 488 twin pregnancies, the amniotic fluid index was similar to that of a single pregnancy.
