Fighting back

Article Abstract:

Former personnel director, Eric Caines' assertion that the UK National Health Service is overstaffed by 200,000 is unsubstantiated. A Royal College of Nursing survey has indicated 66% of nurses consider more nurses are required for optimum patient care. Research has shown a connection between quality care and qualified nurses. A review of research on cost-effectiveness of trained nurses suggests qualified staff reduce recovery periods. Skill-mixing saves money but care quality deteriorates.

Keeping it going

Article Abstract:

To make primary nursing successful a certain path must be followed. The primary nurse must be supported by the associate nurse and her job must be clearly defined. To ensure that the patient group is being cared for by a member of a primary nursing team, duty rotas should be planned so that nurses are not moved from group to group. Attention must also be paid to holiday rotas and duty swapping.

All in a day's work

Article Abstract:

Jake, a 10 weeks old baby was saved by health visitors Ms Irene Woods and Ms Faith Muir who consider 'health visiting' to be a very strange profession. Ms Muir believes that health visitors are very privileged as they have a position in the community and in people's lives at very personal but very significant times.
