Filling the gaps in bariatric surgical research

Article Abstract:

The gaps between the proliferation of bariatric surgical procedures include an assessment of the effectiveness of bariatric surgery in the population, the total impact of bariatric surgery on patients, the health care system, and the psychological mechanisms that promote weight loss after surgery. Through a better understanding of the mechanism physicians and the public will come to appreciate the appropriate role of bariatric surgery in the care of patients with morbid obesity and those living with the complications of obesity.

Enhancement of claims data to improve risk adjustment of hospital mortality

Article Abstract:

The effect on risk-adjusted hospital mortality rates of adding present on admission (POA) codes and numerical laboratory data to administrative claims data are assessed. The analysis has supported the value of enhancing administrative claims data with POA codes and a limited set of numerical laboratory values obtained at admission, as these data provide information to avoid errors in the designation of hospitals.
