Cervical Incompetence Prevention Randomized Cerclage Trial (CIPRACT): study design and preliminary results

Article Abstract:

Women with a history of miscarriage caused by cervical incompetence can be monitored periodically with ultrasound. This would avoid unnecessary treatment with cervical cerclage. Cervical incompetence means the cervix does not stay closed until labor but opens prematurely. Cerclage is a procedure to keep it closed.

Final results of the Cervical Incompetence Prevention Randomized Cerclage Trial (CIPRACT): therapeutic cerclage with bed rest versus bed rest alone

Article Abstract:

Cervical cerclage and bed rest are more effective than bed rest alone in preventing premature birth in women with cervical incompetence. Cervical incompetence means the cervix starts to open prematurely. Cerclage is a surgical procedure to keep the cervix closed until the pregnancy has gone to term.

The effect of therapeutic McDonald cerclage on cervical length as assessed by transvaginal ultrasonography

Article Abstract:

A McDonald cerclage may be effective in increasing the length of the cervix in women at risk of premature birth. A cerclage is a small metal ring that is placed around the cervix to support it. Researchers used a McDonald cerclage to treat 34 women with a short cervix during their 20th week, which is one of the risk factors for premature labor. In most of the women, the cerclage caused the cervix to get longer. This not only reduces the risk of premature labor, but also protects the fetus from infection with organisms normally present in the vagina.
