Firing lines: automatic fire doors

Article Abstract:

A 1991 survey by Factory Mutual on automatic fire doors shows that 1 in 5 doors fail to close properly in an emergency. Rolling steel and swinging doors have the worst failure rate. Good design, correct installation and maintenance are important. In rolling doors spring tension, snagged cables or chains and damage to the hood or verical guides are the most common failures. Damaged guides, cables, binding on the floor or wall or debris in the rack causes horizontal sliding doors to fail. Doors and mechanisms need to be inspected regularly by trained personnel to ensure 100% function.

Article Abstract:

The Audit Commision has found that casualties from fire could be halved and there is not enough focus on national fire prevention. Fire brigades are not oblighed to operate fire safety campaign and they are increasingly under financial pressure which could damage their fire fighting capability. The Commission wants fire authorities to promote fire safety and recommends that the national system of fire risk categorsiation be modernised.
