First newly built AIDS home offers long-term care model

Article Abstract:

The Bailey-Boushay House in Seattle, WA, is the first nursing home custom built for AIDS patients in the US. The facility fits discreetly into a residential area and resembles a small inn with handsome appointments, solaria, open-air decks and a greenhouse. Wings of the house, called 'neighborhoods,' are designed differently to encourage visiting among residents. The success of the project is attributed to patients, gay activists, health planners and many private donors. Bailey-Boushay House can stand as a national model for long-term care facilities.

Heterosexual transmission raising worldwide AIDS rate

Article Abstract:

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the United States, with 202,843 cases of AIDS, has the highest recorded incidence of any country. Statistics are given for several countries, including the Bahamas, which reported that 66.1 persons in 100,000 had AIDS, compared to 15.2 per 100,000 in the US. A WHO conference on the disease deplored the fact that women may have little control over the sexual behavior of their partners. Participants predicted that heterosexual transmission of AIDS would increase.

Word is out, but many are still ignoring AIDS warnings

Article Abstract:

Young adults of high school and college age are most at risk for contracting AIDS, yet studies indicate that this group continues to engage in unsafe sexual behavior. For example, a Brown University study indicates that student sexual behavior changed little between 1975 and 1989. Condom use increased about 29% during that period, but not all experts believe condoms provide adequate protection against HIV transmission.
