Forbidden fruit

Article Abstract:

Medical authorities are concerned by the rising number of sexual-misconduct claims by patients against physicians and are seeking ways to assess and combat the problem. The taboo on doctor-patient sexual relations is part of the ethical code established by Hippocrates and has long been recognized as fundamental to the practice and reputation of health care. Transgressors of the taboo can be predatory, repeatedly taking advantage of patients, or infatuated, believing themselves to be in love. Sexual misconduct is generally underreported.

Physically fit, psychologically stressed

Article Abstract:

The mental health of North American physicians is uncertain because there have not been many research studies in this area. At the 1996 International Conference on Physician Health, several researchers presented findings about the physical and mental health of physicians. Physicians tend to have lower rates of tobacco use, are inclined to neglect their health needs, and suicidal physicians are more likely to die from drug overdose than the general population.

The perils of perfectionism

Article Abstract:

Specialists in stress-reduction for physicians recommend cognitive therapy to help doctors recognize that perfectionism may be ruining their lives. Perfectionism, which usually involves worry, self-doubt and overwork, also causes problems with interpersonal relationships, difficulty in making decisions, and excessive job stress. Most physicians experience some stress, but the drive for perfection prevents many from setting attainable standards.
